A Year Later β A Look at Bitcoin's Halving |
|
|
Bitcoin halving (also known as "halvening") is among the most important events of the crypto space that always has a significant impact on the digital asset market.
Taking place roughly every four years (every 210,000 blocks), halving is Bitcoin's deflationary mechanism that reduces the amount of BTC mined with each block by 50%.
As a result, while miners generate much fewer rewards than before, Bitcoin halvening cuts the flow of new BTC production in half.
But why is this so important for everyday crypto users?
Based on the law of supply and demand, an asset's price increases if the demand exceeds the supply (and vice versa). The instrument's value also surges if the demand stays the same but the supply β or the rate at which new supply is produced β decreases.
In the case of last year's halvening, the latter statement is what best applies to Bitcoin. On May 11, 2020, miners' rewards decreased from 12.5 BTC to 6.25 BTC per block. As a result, there are 50% less new coins produced each year until the next halving.
In addition to a reduction to Bitcoin's inflation rate, the crypto market has experienced increased adoption, which drove up the demand for BTC.
And this is why last year's Bitcoin halvening was a major force behind the cryptocurrency's astonishing 620% ROI between May 2020 and April 2021.
However, besides starting a new bull cycle, the BTC halving had other important impacts on the industry.
