| Central bank digital currencies – previously an idea joked about in the early days of crypto among private trading circles, are now on the cusp of becoming reality for many central banks. We have followed CBDCs briefly in previous editions, and highlighted the hesitation of BoJ in particular, but last Monday, BoJ governor Haruhiko Kuroda announced that it, along with South Korea, will begin running trials for their respective CBDCs in 2021. The BoJ flipped its stance when it released a report on CBDCs on October 9th, where it highlighted that while it doesn't see the demand for cash fading anytime soon, it would be prudent to have a digital alternative that would work alongside cash, rather than replacing it outright, in the event that demand for cash did decline.
Regardless of whether a CBDC is issued to the public at large, the BoJ (and other central banks) see digital currencies as a major improvement for intra-bank settlement and private payment services. The writing is on the wall at this point – on the backs of institutionalization, widespread development and possible deployment of CBDCs is an inevitability and this trend will likely accelerate in the years to come.
