| Finally, a major crypto exchange is moving to enable users to leverage their crypto to capitalize on the traditional markets. Sounds new and innovative, but it's not, and to be honest, we are surprised and shocked that it took this long. Exchange operators are crying about missing the early DeFi chain (and all those trading fees), but they've also missed the entire stock market dump and subsequent 'V' recovery.
This week, we wanted to remind everyone of the forgotten exchange that blazed a path for others to follow. 1Broker was the first exchange to offer margin trading with crypto, to trade against traditional assets such as equities or commodities. The first guy through the doors is usually the first guy to get shot, and that is exactly what happened with 1Broker when the SEC and CFTC (without any prior communication) abruptly seized and shut down the website/company. This was one of the first direct actions taken against an exchange, and shortly after, a lot of other exchanges and service providers started their transition to being KYC compliant.
1Broker paid the dues for the industry as a whole and served as a warning shot for other similar companies. Fast-forward 7 years, and we have come full circle – it's likely that we will see a rush of exchanges move to capitalize on this and roll out their own product offering, appealing to people outside of crypto. The bridges between crypto and legacy are expanding, and the crypto incumbents will be the primary beneficiaries.
